Fair Use Information

Fair use was brought into law in the United States by the Copyright Act of 1976, 17 U.S.C. § 107. The purpose is to balance the interests of copyright holders with the interests of the public. The most common examples of fair use include commentary, search engines, criticism, parody, news reporting, research, scholarship, teaching, and library archiving.

Fair Use Rationale

This website uses published images and documents of three types. The fair use rationale for each type is detailed below.

Company Logos & Product Photos
  • This website acts as both a library and search engine for historical information, and does not generate any kind of revenue.
  • The use of these images is entirely encyclopedic in nature, for identification purposes.
  • The images are of a reduced size (low resolution) and are, therefore, non-reproducable for commercial purposes.
  • Use of these reduced-size images does not limit the ability of the copyright holder to market or sell their product(s).
  • Use of these reduced-size images not diminish the value of the original media to the copyright holder.
  • Use of these reduced-size images provides contextual and historical significance.
  • The understanding of the related information would potentially be diminished without the use of the images.
Downloadable Brochures & Manuals
  • This website acts as both a library and search engine for historical information, and does not generate any kind of revenue.
  • The archiving of these documents is entirely encyclopedic in nature.
  • Downloads of these documents are not offered for current products and, thus, do not affect the manufacturer's control over who receives current product information.
  • Availability of these documents does not limit the ability of the copyright holder to market or sell their product(s).
  • Availability of these documents will not diminish the value of the original media to the copyright holder.
  • Availability of these documents provides contextual and historical significance.
  • The understanding of the related information would potentially be diminished without the availability of these documents.
